Cruising the mighty
Ayeyarwaddy Delta of Myanmar
The Irrawaddy Delta itself is a vast basin stretching from
the coast of the Bay of Bengal across to the Bago Range. It
receives year round drainage from several major rivers,
including the Ayeyarwaddy, (Irrawaddy) Bago, Yangon (Hlaing)
and Pathein (Ngawun) rivers. Inter cut with narrower canals,
streams and tributaries, this riverine network irrigates
millions of hectares of farmland, making the delta the
central 'rice bowl' of Myanmar. Estuarine environments along
the coast provide much of the country's saltwater and
freshwater fish harvest. Naturally abundant the Delta is
heavily populated with towns and villages to be found
through out.
